The Metric System Explained โ A Complete Beginner's Guide
The metric system is the international standard for measurement used by every country in the world except the United States, Liberia, and Myanmar. It was developed in France during the 1790s and adopted globally through the 19th and 20th centuries because of its elegant simplicity: all units relate by powers of ten, making conversions a matter of moving a decimal point.
The Seven Base Units
The modern metric system (officially called the International System of Units, or SI) is built on seven base units from which all other units are derived:
| Quantity | Unit | Symbol |
|---|---|---|
| Length | meter | m |
| Mass | kilogram | kg |
| Time | second | s |
| Temperature | kelvin | K |
| Electric current | ampere | A |
| Amount of substance | mole | mol |
| Luminous intensity | candela | cd |
Metric Prefixes โ The Power of Ten
Every metric unit can be scaled up or down using standardized prefixes. The most common ones in everyday use:
| Prefix | Symbol | Multiplier | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| kilo- | k | 1,000 | 1 kilometer = 1,000 meters |
| hecto- | h | 100 | 1 hectoliter = 100 liters |
| deca- | da | 10 | 1 decameter = 10 meters |
| (base) | โ | 1 | meter, gram, liter |
| deci- | d | 0.1 | 1 decimeter = 0.1 meters |
| centi- | c | 0.01 | 1 centimeter = 0.01 meters |
| milli- | m | 0.001 | 1 millimeter = 0.001 meters |
| micro- | ฮผ | 0.000001 | 1 micrometer = 0.000001 meters |
Converting Within the Metric System
To convert to a larger unit, divide (move decimal left). To convert to a smaller unit, multiply (move decimal right). The number of places equals the number of prefix steps.
Example: Convert 3,500 millimeters to meters.
milli โ base = 3 steps to the right on the prefix scale โ divide by 1,000
3,500 mm รท 1,000 = 3.5 meters
Metric vs Imperial Quick Reference
| Metric | Imperial Equivalent |
|---|---|
| 1 kilometer | 0.621 miles |
| 1 meter | 3.281 feet |
| 1 centimeter | 0.394 inches |
| 1 kilogram | 2.205 pounds |
| 1 gram | 0.035 ounces |
| 1 liter | 0.264 gallons / 33.8 fl oz |
| 1 milliliter | 0.034 fl oz |
Why the US Didn't Switch to Metric
The US actually came close to converting. The Metric Conversion Act of 1975 made metric the preferred system and established a board to manage the transition. But the conversion was voluntary, the board was dissolved in 1982, and without enforcement the change never happened. The cost of converting infrastructure, signage, and consumer habits proved politically impossible to mandate. Today the US uses metric in science, medicine, military, and international trade โ but everyday commerce remains in customary units.
