How to Read a Ruler in Inches and Centimeters

Reading a ruler accurately is a fundamental skill for woodworking, sewing, cooking, construction, and many everyday tasks. While it seems simple, the fractional markings on an imperial ruler confuse many people, and metric rulers have their own nuances. This guide covers everything you need to measure with precision.

Reading an Imperial Ruler (Inches)

An imperial ruler shows inches divided into fractions. The longer the line, the larger the fraction. Here's what each mark represents on a standard ruler:

Mark LengthRepresentsDecimal Equivalent
Longest (main)1 inch1.000"
2nd longest1/2 inch0.500"
3rd longest1/4 inch0.250"
4th longest1/8 inch0.125"
Shortest1/16 inch0.0625"

How to Read a Fractional Measurement

To read a measurement between inch marks: count which fraction mark the object ends at, then count how many of those marks past the last whole inch. Example: if an object ends 3 small marks past the 2-inch mark on a ruler with 1/8" markings, the measurement is 2 and 3/8 inches (2.375").

Tip: Always measure from the end of the ruler, not the edge of the physical ruler body. Most rulers have a small gap at the 0 end โ€” measure from the 0 mark itself.

Reading a Metric Ruler (Centimeters and Millimeters)

Metric rulers are simpler. The large numbered marks are centimeters. Each centimeter is divided into 10 smaller marks, each representing 1 millimeter. To read a metric measurement: note the last full centimeter, then count the millimeter marks past it.

Example: if an object ends 7 small marks past the 4cm mark, the measurement is 4.7 cm (or 47mm).

Frequently Asked Questions

How many millimeters are in an inch?
Exactly 25.4 millimeters. This is a defined exact conversion โ€” 1 inch = 25.4 mm with no rounding. So 1 foot = 304.8 mm and 1 yard = 914.4 mm.
What's the smallest measurement on a standard ruler?
Most standard rulers show 1/16 inch (about 1.6mm) as the smallest imperial marking. Some precision rulers show 1/32" or even 1/64". Metric rulers typically show 1mm as the smallest marking.
How do I measure something longer than my ruler?
Mark the end point of your ruler on the object or surface, reposition the ruler starting from that mark, and add the measurements together. For longer measurements, a tape measure is more practical than a rigid ruler.
